Statistics

How many  young carers are there in the UK?

The 2001 Census has shown that there are approx. 175,000 young carers in the UK.  This is 3 times more than was estimated by the Office of National Statistics in 1996.

The Question asked was:
Do you look after, or give any help or support to family members, friends, neighbours or others because of:

  • long-term physical or mental ill-health or disability, or
  • problems related to old age?

The following options were given:

  • No
  • Yes, 1-19 hours a week
  • Yes, 20-49 hours a week
  • Yes, 50+ hours a week

Breakdown by age and hours of care provided:
