The Include Partnership (The Children's Society and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers) in conjunction with The Department for Education, The Department of Health, The National Treatment Agency, ADASS, ADCS and SCIE invite you to attend this important event to ensure service managers, policy leads and senior practitioners involved in providing parental substance misuse and mental health services, are equipped with the latest guidance and are able to identify and respond to wider family issues where children and young people are in a caring role.

These free events will offer delegates the opportunity to hear about latest government policy from key senior officials and see a range of good practice. Workshops will showcase areas such as, developing joint working protocols, safeguarding, whole family assessments and establishing thresholds.

This conferences is to ensure those involved in providing services to young carers affected by HIV and their families including service managers, policy leads, and senior practitioners in health and the Voluntary and Statutory Sector are equipped with the latest 'Think Family' guidance and are able to identify and respond to wider issues for these where children and young people are in a caring role.
This free event will also offer delegates the opportunity to hear about The Children's Society’s Project funded by the Elton John AIDS Foundation developing good practice guidance and support to be rolled out nationally.

New Resource:
Supporting Young Carers: A resource for Schools
The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, in partnership with The Children's Society, has produced Supporting Young Carers: A resource for Schools.
The resource informs schools about the impacts of caring on a young carers’ education and the needs of this vulnerable group. It highlights good practice approaches to supporting pupils who are young carers through a preventative approach, based on multi-agency responsibilities for the whole family.
The resource will help schools develop and embed a framework of support for young carers using a whole-school approach. It will support schools to achieve outcomes for the National Healthy Schools Enhancement Model and implement key guarantees of Your child, your schools, our future: building a 21st century schools system.
The resource containing case studies, awareness-raising materials and printable timesaving tools is a free online tool.

This year's festival will be held on the 25th-27th at YMCA Fairthorne Manor. The theme is 'Building Bridges'.

Young Carers Festival 2009 - Celebrate!
More than 1500 young carers from all over the UK travelled to celebrate the 10th Young Carers Festival UK for the weekend (26-28 June 2009) organised by The Children’s Society and YMCA Fairthorne Manor.
Tim Loughton, Conservative MP and Shadow Minister for Children met with the young people and was given a framed photo of the last 9 years of festival highlights in recognition of all his support and committment to ensuring the voices of young caresr were heard in parliamentary proceses. John Coughlan, Director of Children’s Services Hampshire joined in the celebrations and launched the new Hampshire young carers forum. Tim Loughton then joined everyone on the river bank and launched the boating regatta.
The weather was sunny and the rain stayed away for us! The weekend closed with a huge birthday celebration and a cake for 1500!!!
Since 2000, more than 14,000 young carers have attended the festival, giving them a chance to meet other young people who are also looking after someone with an illness or disability. Over the years, young carers have had a major influence on the content of two major pieces of carers’ legislation, guidance for teachers and, most recently, the content of the Prime Minister’s New Deal for Carers Strategy.
Model Memorandum of Understanding on working together to support
young carers
The Association of Directors of Adult services and the Association of Directors of Children's Services Carers Projects
The Association of Directors of Adult services and the Association of Directors of Children's Services Carers Projects have developed a Model Memorandum of Understanding on working together to support young carers as part of a joint commitment to help take forward the national strategy for carers launched in 2008.
The value of this work lies in its ability to be used as a:
- basis for joint action by Directors;
- guide for staff;
- platform for joint working with local partners;
- means of reassurance for Councillors;
- framework for accountability to families and young carers; and,
- an opportunity to inform scrutiny and regulatory assessments
The approach to its preparation has been inclusive and based on :
- key policies,
- evidence and best practice advice.
- Decisions about local implementation are a matter for statutory directors to determine.
At the same time, widespread adoption would help to build upon the delivery of national policies and local progress in supporting young carers and their families. Development of the memorandum was developed with support from the Department of Health and advice from the Department for Children, Schools and Families together with The Children’s Society, carers’ organisations and the ADASS/ADCS Carers Reference Group.

National Young Carers Forum
The views of young carers inform the training we offer to professionals. We facilitate the National Young Carers Forum (NYCF). which is composed of a diverse group of young carers who come together to help inform our work and ialso to help inform the new Government CarersStrategy. Most recently soem embers presented at a National Confrence in February and other took part in making a film for Teachers TV. Membership includes projects from Crossroads for Carers, The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, Action for Children, Barnardo's, The British Red Cross, The Children's Society and Independent Projects. The views of young carers are informing delivery of this national training. NYCF, have shared their views on a DVD which is used at all training events and Conferences, and is now available to buy. A third NYCF residential event is planned for September 2009.
