Schools Resource Supporting Young Carers: A resource for schools

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers and The Children’s Society, has produced Supporting Young Carers: A resource for schools to help develop a deeper understanding of the issues faced by young carers.

The resource is intended for all staff, senior leadership teams and governing bodies working, largely, within secondary schools. Its content is also relevant to both primary schools and further education colleges. Its aim is to encourage and support schools to develop and embed a support framework to remove the barriers to education that young carers face, so that they have equal access to education as their peers.

The resource:

  • helps schools identify young carers and informs schools about the impacts of caring on a young carers’
education and the needs of this vulnerable group.
  • highlights good practice approaches to supporting pupils who are young carers.
  • facilitates the development of a framework of support for young carers using a whole school approach.

The resource will guide your school through all the necessary steps needed to help young carers, from developing understanding and identifying young carers, to strategic and practical support, and building a healthy school environment where pupils who are young carers can flourish.

The information contained in each chapter will be more relevant to particular members of staff. We have highlighted this accordingly. Young carers are supported more effectively through collaborative work amongst all staff, however, and so please work hand-in-hand with your colleagues to utilise the ideas and to create and implement your action plans for young carers.

Each chapter is summarised by bullet points which show how you can support the young carers in your school. We hope that you and your colleagues will find these useful if you develop a school’s action plan.
