Young Carers Initiative in Hampshire

Please visit the links below to find out about the specific areas of our work:

Most young people care at some point in their lives, however, for some young people their caring role will impact significantly on their lives.

  • The 2001 census found 175000 young carers in the UK.
  • At least 3300 of these live in Hampshire.
  • That is one in a hundred of the school population.
  • Many of these young carers will have significant unmet needs.

We wouldn’t want to give up caring because we love them too much. If we gave up caring we’d have to change our whole way of life, but we would like help and people to take notice of us.
(Wiltshire Young Carers’ Strategy in ‘Making it Work’ 2002)

Hampshire County Council Children's Services Department has commissioned The Children’s Society to undertake development work for young carers and their families throughout the county.

Additionally The Children’s Fund is funding The Children’s Society to develop countywide Information for young carers, their families and for organisations and agencies working with them. (Click here to view resources)

Our work is guided by the Hampshire multi-agency strategy for young carers 2009-2012 which is now avavilable. The strategy is for all agencies and sets out the shared vision and action plan for the next three years.

How can this project help you?

There are many young carers projects in Hampshire that provide specific support to young carers and their families (click here to find ‘projects/support’ in Hampshire).

However it is important that all agencies who work with children or in Adult Community Care are aware of the whole family’s needs and so develop practice to identify and meet needs wherever they first come into contact or seek help.

All our work is informed through direct consultation with young carers and their families.
